Sleaford Castle
Sleaford Castle is a medieval episcopal castle in Sleaford, Lincolnshire, built in the early 12th century by the Bishop of Lincoln. It was a quadrilateral stone castle with square corner towers, a high central keep and a substantial gatehouse; it remained habitable into the mid-16th century. Today almost all above-ground masonry is gone and the site survives as earthworks, a moat and a small toppled fragment of wall in the inner bailey.

A rectangular, quadrilateral stone castle set on flat fenland surrounded by a broad water-filled moat and low earthwork banks. Straight curtain walls link square, projecting corner towers to a tall central keep that rises above the inner bailey. A substantial rectangular gatehouse fronts the entrance with a wide gate passage. To the south a long tithe-barn footprint lies within the outer enclosure; the river and dam with a mill sit beside the outer defences.

Sleaford Castle was built by the Bishop of Lincoln in the early 1120s — a quadrilateral stone castle with square corner towers, a high central keep and a substantial gatehouse. Two English monarchs are known to have stayed here: King John, and Henry VIII, who visited twice — once in 1541 with his queen Catherine Howard — and held a State Council at the castle.
The castle passed to the Duke of Somerset in 1544, was confiscated by the Crown in 1546, and continued its decline under the ownership of the Carre family. Still habitable as late as 1555, it fell into disrepair during the latter half of the 16th century.
Almost all the above-ground masonry is now gone: the site survives as earthworks, a moat, and a small toppled fragment of wall in the inner bailey.
