A compact quadrangular castle centered on a southern gatehouse that projects from a low sandstone curtain wall; the outer gatehouse consists of two squat round towers flanking a tall vehicular arch, built of pale local sandstone rubble and ashlar with small slit windows. Behind the gateway a square cobbled courtyard is enclosed by ranges abutting the curtain wall: the northern range contains a first-floor great hall, the eastern range contains kitchens, and to the north the ground falls steeply from the hall edge where the motte and former moat sat. Lawned parkland and mature trees lie to the south.

Brampton Bryan Castle guarded an important route from Ludlow along the Teme Valley to Knighton and on into central Wales. The earliest documentary evidence is a mention of a "tower with curtilage" on the site in 1295; at its height the quadrangular castle sat on a motte within a moat, entered by a bridge leading to a double gatehouse in the southern curtain wall. For almost 700 years since, the castle has remained in the Harley family.

The Harleys backed Parliament in the Civil War, and paid for it. On 26 July 1643 Sir William Vavasour, the newly appointed governor of Hereford, surrounded Brampton Bryan with about 700 soldiers; Lady Brilliana Harley, "They are in mighty violence against me," she had written to her son Sir Edward, held the castle with three of her children, about 50 civilians and 50 soldiers. After her death, command passed to the family doctor, Nathaniel Wright, and Royalist forces mounted a second siege in the spring of the following year.

The Grade I listed ruins, an outer gatehouse, part of the inner gatehouse and a stretch of the south wall of the hall and kitchen range, in local sandstone rubble and ashlar, now stand in landscaped parkland that obscures the castle's full extent. Brampton Bryan Hall nearby remains the home of the descendants of Sir Robert Harley, 1st Earl of Oxford.
