Saffron Walden Castle

Saffron Walden Castle (Walden Castle) was a 12th-century medieval fortress founded by Geoffrey de Mandeville during the Anarchy. It comprised a square Norman keep within a bailey and stood on a natural high point in the town. The keep was slighted on Henry II's orders in the 1150s; today only the ruined core survives and the site is a scheduled monument and Grade I listed structure.

As it stood in 1143

The shape it held in its prime.

A compact, geometric fortress dominated by a square Norman keep set within a roughly rectangular bailey bounded by a continuous curtain wall. The keep presents straight, vertical faces and a blocky, rectangular silhouette rising from the bailey core. The whole castle crowns a natural high point within the town so the bailey footprint shapes the surrounding streets. At its prime the keep and curtain wall are complete and form a clear, dominant outline above Saffron Walden.

Its story

The story of Saffron Walden Castle.

Walden Castle was built during the Anarchy of the 12th century by Geoffrey de Mandeville — one of several castles he raised to reinforce his power across the region, under King Stephen, who created him hereditary Count of Essex. A square Norman keep stood within its bailey on a natural high point of the town.

The keep was slighted on Henry II's orders in the 1150s, and only the ruined core of the structure remains today — a scheduled monument and Grade I listed structure at the heart of Saffron Walden.
