At its prime the summit is occupied by masonry and timber castle structures, a compact stone-built keep or rubble-built strongpoint and ancillary timber buildings, while the bailey is enclosed by a timber palisade and bank, all set beside the medieval town of Rayleigh.

Rayleigh Castle, also known as Rayleigh Mount, was a masonry and timber motte-and-bailey castle raised in the Essex town of Rayleigh in the 11th century, shortly after the Norman Conquest of 1066. Its builder Swein was the son of Robert FitzWimarc, a Norman lord and favourite of Edward the Confessor, and on Swein's death the castle passed to his son Robert of Essex.

The masonry foundations were removed in later centuries, and today only the earthworks survive: the large earthen motte and traces of the bailey, managed as a historic mount.
