A long, low two-storey castellated house of light-coloured masonry with multiple round, drum-like towers capped by crenellated parapets; towers project at the ends and above the entrance range. The central block is a rectangular range with regularly spaced tall rectangular windows and a recessed arched entrance beneath a low crenellated parapet. A large ground-floor projecting bay window sits left of the doorway. The castle stands on a gentle lawn beside Lough Cutra with a curved gravel approach.

Lough Cutra Castle was designed by the English architect John Nash for Colonel Charles Vereker, 2nd Viscount Gort; construction started in 1811 and was completed in 1817. The castle stands beside Lough Cutra near Gort in south County Galway — at 1,000 acres, Europe's largest privately owned lake.
The castle was later acquired as a residence by Hugh Gough, 1st Viscount Gough, and returned to the founding family in 1952, when Standish Vereker, 7th Viscount Gort, purchased it; restoration was carried out by Sir Humphry Wakefield, then husband of Gort's great-niece, the Hon. Elizabeth Sidney. Still privately owned and lived in, the castle opens its grounds each May for the Lough Cutra Castle Triathlon, part of the Castle Race Series, held since 2012.
