Monivea Castle
Monivea Castle is a former O'Kelly tower house near Monivea, County Galway, later expanded and incorporated into the ffrench family estate. The site includes the old tower house beside later domestic ranges, estate parkland and the separate ffrench Mausoleum set in Monivea Woods.

A tall, rectangular stone tower house with plain vertical walls and small windows rises beside a long two-storey rendered domestic range with a pitched slate roof and simple rectangular sash windows; chimneys punctuate the roofline of the attached house. The tower's uppermost edge is irregular and partly ivy-clad. Both buildings face a grassed forecourt framed by thick woodland; rough grey stone and lime-render surfaces show weathering and patched repairs.

Monivea began as an O'Kelly tower house near Monivea in County Galway. It was acquired by the ffrench family, one of the fourteen Tribes of Galway, who developed it further — building Monivea Castle proper and increasing the fortification around the original Norman tower. Successive generations of ffrenches also reclaimed the estate's once-dominant bogland into useful farming ground.
By 1876 the estate ran to 10,121 acres, taking in the tower house ruins, the castle itself, the ffrench Mausoleum and Monivea Woods. The demesne lands were worked directly for the landlord's benefit while outlying land was rented for farming, and the town of Monivea took shape from the estate's farmers, domestic servants and merchant posts. Monivea Woods is now known for its unusual flora and archaeology.
