The shape it held in its prime.
A squat, rectangular four-storey towerhouse of rough grey masonry rising directly from a low stone bawn and rocky foreshore; a square staircase turret projects from one corner. The lower storey displays narrow gunloops and small slit windows, higher levels have simple rectangular openings. The roof is solid rather than ruined. The castle’s massing is plain and blocky, the stone surface weathered, with the sea immediately alongside and a low quay or wall extending along the shore.
Its story
The story of Oranmore Castle.
Oranmore Castle is a rectangular towerhouse standing at the water's edge in Oranmore, County Galway — four storeys of stone with a square staircase turret and gunloops piercing the bottom floor. It served as a stronghold of the Clanricardes, a notable family from Galway.
In March 1642 the town of Oranmore joined Confederate Ireland in rebellion, and the castle's owners — the Marquess and 5th Earl Clanricarde — held out against it. Though possession was temporarily lost, the 6th Earl regained the castle, and in 1666 leased it to Walter Athy, whose descendants kept control of Oranmore until 1853. Reroofed and reoccupied in the 20th century, it remains a visible landmark on the shore.
