Mallow Castle
Mallow Castle is a site in Mallow, County Cork, composed around a 16th-century fortified house with surviving multi-storey stone walls and polygonal towers and the nearby ruins of an older castle. The fortified house was occupied by the Jephson family for centuries and the site today sits within parkland and gardens managed as a National Monument.

A long rectangular three-storey fortified house of grey limestone with two polygonal corner towers on the north-west and south-west, high gables and stepped battlements, and rows of mullioned windows. The wings project from the centre of the north and south walls; the main entrance sits in the north wing. Much of the roofline is open to sky in places and interior courtyards are exposed; the building stands amid parkland with a gravel approach and iron gate.

Mallow came into the possession of the Earls of Desmond in 1282. Following the Geraldine Wars the estate was confiscated by Elizabeth I, who granted it — with the Lordship of Mallow and 6,000 acres of surrounding country — to Sir Thomas Norreys, Lord President of Munster, who is believed to have built the 16th-century fortified house and died in 1599.
Norreys's daughter Elizabeth and her husband Sir John Jephson inherited the house, and the Jephsons remained at Mallow for almost 400 years — interrupted in 1645, when James Tuchet, 3rd Earl of Castlehaven, captured the castle. Commander Maurice Jephson eventually sold the mansion.
The 33-acre site holds three buildings: the ruins of a 13th-century castle, the fortified house, and a 19th-century baronial mansion with parts dating to the 1690s. The fortified house is a long, three-storey rectangle with polygonal towers on two corners — early Jacobean in style, with high gables, stepped battlements and mullioned windows — designed to provide a field of fire entirely around it. The site sits within gardens and parkland as a National Monument.
