The shape it held in its prime.
A compact medieval stone fortress occupying the raised Castle Hill above the town, formed as a walled enclosure of local grey masonry with crenellated parapets and a defensible gatehouse fronting the town approach. Service ranges and timber-roofed halls stood within the curtain walls around a central courtyard; roofs were of timber and lead, and the ramparts provided lookout positions over the harbour and town. The castle was complete and intact in this period.
