Castle Huntly

Castle Huntly is a Scottish castle built around 1452 that stands on a rocky outcrop near the shore of the Firth of Tay, about 7 miles west of Dundee in the Carse of Gowrie. Historically known as Castle Lyon for a period, it remains a complete, occupied building today and is visible from the main road between Dundee and Perth.

The shape it held in its prime.

Perched atop a prominent rocky outcrop, the castle's clustered masonry buildings rise directly from bedrock into the surrounding low farmland toward the Firth of Tay. The massing is compact, with connected stone ranges and a varied roofline forming a single visible silhouette from a distance. The site sits above former marshy ground, giving the buildings a raised, defensible aspect; the estuary and open fields frame the castle on the shoreward and landward sides.
