Edinburgh Castle

Edinburgh Castle is a historic fortress occupying Castle Rock, a volcanic plug overlooking the city of Edinburgh. The site contains a cluster of medieval and early modern stone buildings including St Margaret's Chapel, the Royal Palace and the Great Hall, set within curtain walls and defensive terraces on a steep crag.

The shape it held in its prime.

Perched on a steep dolerite crag, the castle reads as a compact cluster of grey-brown stone buildings and high curtain walls. A long, narrow ridge approach from the east leads to a gatehouse and Crown Square; above sits a rectangular palace block with regular rows of mullioned windows and pitched roofs with chimneys. Rounded artillery towers and crenellated battlements punctuate the curtain, and a small stone chapel occupies the summit. At its prime the roofs, windows and battlements are complete and intact.
