Usk Castle
Usk Castle is a medieval castle site on a hill immediately north of the town of Usk in Monmouthshire, Wales. Built from the 12th century and altered in later medieval centuries, its substantial stone remains include curtain walls, the gatehouse (now partly incorporated into Castle House) and a dovecote tower; the site and gardens are Grade I listed.

Perched on a grassy hill above the town, the castle at its prime had continuous grey-stone curtain walls enclosing a broad inner bailey; a prominent stone gatehouse controlled the main approach and was connected into domestic ranges now known as Castle House. Surviving wall fragments show tall recessed arches and narrow doorways; a distinct round dovecote tower rose above the walls. The bailey slopes gently and was open turf in front of the gatehouse and inner ranges.

Usk Castle stands on a hill immediately north of the town of Usk in Monmouthshire. To control this stretch of the Welsh Marches the Normans brought in the Marcher lord Richard Fitz Gilbert de Clare, who sought to strengthen the castle's defences against Welsh attack — but he was ambushed and killed north of Abergavenny in 1136. The castle was captured by the Welsh again in 1174, when turmoil in the region flared into open conflict.
The de Clares held it across generations: Gilbert de Clare, 7th Earl of Hertford, another holder of Usk, was killed at the Battle of Bannockburn. After the rebellion of Owain Glyndŵr (1400–1405) the castle passed to the Duchy of Lancaster and, with stability restored, no further refortification was undertaken; it was allowed gradually to decay.
Substantial stone remains survive, including curtain walls, a dovecote tower and the gatehouse, parts of which are incorporated into Castle House — a Grade I listed building in its own right, as is the castle site itself. Though the castle is today the private residence of the Humphreys family, events are held through the summer months.
