Cathedral of Saint Domnius

Katedrala sv. Dujma u Splitu

The Cathedral of Saint Domnius in Split is the Christian church formed from Diocletian’s 4th-century imperial mausoleum, now the seat of the Archdiocese of Split-Makarska. The complex combines the octagonal Roman mausoleum, medieval and later altars and fittings, and a tall multi-stage bell tower rising from the palace ground. It remains a functioning cathedral within the Diocletian’s Palace UNESCO ensemble.

What Cathedral of Saint Domnius looked like in its prime.

An octagonal mass of pale Brač limestone and ashlar blocks, low red-tiled roofs and a Romanesque–Gothic multistage bell tower rising in open arcaded stages; the main entrance framed by an ancient carved stone portal with twin walnut doors carved in panels. Inside a circular plan beneath a brick-sheathed dome, eight red-granite Corinthian columns form an inner ring, punctuated by square and semicircular niches holding stone altars and sculpted reliefs.
