Kastellet

Kastellet is a star-shaped citadel in Copenhagen arranged as a pentagon with five bastions, an encircling moat and inner buildings. Its grounds include barracks terraces, a commander's house, a baroque church, a working windmill and small storehouses, and it has served as an active military post and public park.

As it stood in 1725

What Kastellet looked like in its prime.

A five-pointed star fort of earthen, grass-covered ramparts and sloping glacis around a water-filled moat. Red-tiled, two-storey barrack terraces and yellow-painted masonry officer houses cluster within the pentagon around a broad rectangular parade ground. The southern King's Gate is a stone, Dutch-Baroque portal with pilasters and a royal bust; a wooden Dutch-style windmill crowns the southwestern bastion. Paths run along the grassy crowns of the ramparts, trees dot the inner lawns.
