What Ashmolean Museum looked like in its prime.

A broad mid-19th-century neoclassical stone façade in pale ashlar with a deep Ionic portico: tall fluted columns support a carved triangular pediment topped by a seated statue. Symmetrical wings with arched upper windows, carved wreath panels and a strong cornice run either side. A raised paved forecourt with balustraded terrace and wide stone steps leads to the monumental entrance; banners hang from the portico and modern sculpture occupies the forecourt.
