Coventry Cathedral

The Cathedral Church of Saint Michael (Coventry Cathedral) is a Church of England cathedral in Coventry. The ruined shell of the 14th–15th century Gothic St Michael's stands beside the modern Hollington sandstone cathedral designed by Basil Spence and consecrated in 1962; together they form a single site emphasising both the wartime destruction and post-war rebuilding.

The shape it held in its prime.

A juxtaposition of a ruined 14th–15th century red sandstone Gothic church — its surviving tower and pierced window tracery rising as a tall spire — beside a 20th-century Hollington sandstone cathedral with flat roof, angular concrete entrance columns and a vertical chequerboard concrete frame for a huge stained-glass baptistry window. Bronze sculpture is mounted on the new exterior walls; the scale ranges from the 284 ft medieval spire to the low modern roof punctuated by a 26 m flèche.
