Bois de Boulogne

The Bois de Boulogne is a large public park on the western edge of Paris, laid out in the mid‑19th century as a model English‑style landscape with lakes, cascades, promenades and pleasure grounds. It contains formal gardens, artificial lakes and islands, amusement and botanical gardens, and sporting facilities including racecourses and riding grounds. The park remains a major recreational and cultural green space within the 16th arrondissement.

What Bois de Boulogne looked like in its prime.

A broad, wooded expanse of meandering gravel paths, long straight allées and open lawns punctuated by artificial water features: two large lakes divided by a raised, tree‑lined causeway and a seven‑metre stone cascade pouring into a grotto. The lower lake has two planted islands linked by a narrow suspension bridge and a Swiss‑style chalet restaurant; promenades are edged with stone balustrades, concrete bridges painted to resemble wood and small rustic pavilions set beneath stands of beech, linden, chestnut and exotic trees.
