Altes Museum
The Altes Museum is an early 19th-century Neoclassical museum building on Berlin's Museum Island, designed by Karl Friedrich Schinkel and opened for the royal collections. It was conceived as a temple-like public museum with a monumental Ionic portico, a central domed rotunda and exhibition rooms arranged around two inner courtyards, and by the late 19th century displayed the royal antiquities collection.

A two-storey cubic museum block set on a raised plinth, 87 by 55 metres, closed to the Lustgarten by a monumental 18-column Ionic portico; the freestanding broad staircase of dark granodiorite ascends to the portico. The entablature bears sandstone eagle sculptures and a long dedicatory inscription. Above the cube rises a recessed rotunda with a coffered domed cupola and a ring gallery supported on twenty Corinthian columns. Exterior stonework is mainly Cotta and Reinhardtsdorfer sandstone; steps and plinth are darker granodiorite.
