Munich Waldfriedhof

Waldfriedhof München-Großhadern

The Munich Waldfriedhof is a large municipal woodland cemetery in southwest Munich, notable as one of the first woodland-style cemeteries in Germany. Designed by Hans Grässel and opened in 1907, it is organised into an older 'Alter Teil' and a later 'Neuer Teil' and contains almost 60,000 graves, several war cemeteries and small chapels.

What Munich Waldfriedhof looked like in its prime.

A vast, park-like burial landscape of grassy glades and groves under a canopy of mature coniferous and deciduous trees. Low rectangular granite grave slabs and modest headstones sit in informal groupings and aligned rows across gently undulating lawns. Meandering cobbled and gravel paths weave between the burial plots. Scattered small masonry chapels and simple stone memorials with tiled roofs and plastered façades punctuate the wooded setting, giving an intimate, verdant scale to the site.
