Theresienwiese

Theresienwiese is a 42-hectare open festival ground in the Ludwigsvorstadt-Isarvorstadt district of Munich, best known as the site of the annual Oktoberfest. The large rectangular gravel and compacted-surface area is ringed by roads, trees and urban blocks, with the Ruhmeshalle and the Bavaria statue at its western edge and St. Paul's Church to the north.

What Theresienwiese looked like in its prime.

An immense, flat 42-hectare expanse of compacted gravel and coarse sand, mostly bare of continuous grass, crossed by paved access tracks and punctuated by lamp posts, bollards and temporary service buildings. The western skyline is dominated by the low classical Ruhmeshalle and the Bavaria statue; to the north rises the 97 m neo‑Gothic tower of St. Paul’s Church. Surrounding streets and rows of late‑19th/early‑20th century residential façades frame the open field; seasonal marquees and fenced layouts are placed across the surface during events.
