Marienplatz

Marienplatz is the central square of Munich, historically the city's main market and civic space since 1158. The square is dominated by the neo-Gothic New Town Hall on the north side, the reconstructed Gothic Old Town Hall on the east, and the Mariensäule column at its centre.

A broad rectangular paved square dominated on the north by a colossal neo‑Gothic stone façade with a tall central clock tower and filigree spire. The New Town Hall's ground floor has a row of stone arcades; traceried windows, pinnacles and statues animate the upper storeys. At the square's centre stands a free‑standing marble column topped by a gilded Virgin Mary; smaller bronze fountains and putti cluster at the base. The Old Town Hall with its pointed tower anchors the east side; low commercial buildings line south and west.
