Church of Our Lady

Frauenkirche

The Frauenkirche (Church of Our Lady) in Dresden is an 18th-century Lutheran church built in the Baroque style with a large concave stone dome. Designed by George Bähr and completed in 1743, it is a centrally planned church with the altar, pulpit and baptismal font arranged for full visibility of the congregation. The original was destroyed in 1945 and carefully reconstructed and reconsecrated in 2005.

What Church of Our Lady looked like in its prime.

A monumental Baroque central-plan church in warm Saxon sandstone, dominated by a concave, bell-shaped stone dome with a cylindrical drum and open lantern topped by a gilded orb and cross. The façade is articulated by high, narrow arched windows, paired pilasters, ornate cartouches and corner stair towers with decorative pinnacles; a round clock is set into the entablature beneath the dome. The massing reads as a square base pierced by tall vertical fenestration and crowned by the massive stone cupola.
