Grünwald Castle
Grünwald Castle is a medieval hill castle above the Isar river in Grünwald, Bavaria. The present appearance dates mainly from late 15th-century rebuilding and later partial demolitions; today it houses the Museum Grünwald and retains a tall square donjon, curtain walls and red-tiled residential wings.

Perched on a wooded river hill, the castle is an irregular rectangular fortress of light-plastered stone with red clay-tile roofs. A high, square donjon rises in the north‑east corner; an embattled small tower marks the north‑west corner. An elongated three-storey east wing and a stepped three-level west wing connect the towers. A kennel with a round tower and a deep moat surrounds the site; a gate tower bears a renewed cycle of coats of arms. A deep, tufa-lined fountain sits in the central courtyard.

The high medieval castle of the 12th century was documented as a possession of the counts of Andechs. Louis II, Duke of Bavaria, acquired the fortress from Ulrich Vellenberg, a ministeriales of the counts of Andechs, and it then served also as a residence for his consort, Matilda of Habsburg.
The present building dates mainly from the late 15th century, when the castle was renovated to celebrate the wedding of Albert IV, Duke of Bavaria, to Kunigunde of Austria, daughter of Emperor Frederick III. Louis X, Duke of Bavaria, was born here in 1495, and at a conference here the co-governing dukes William IV and Ludwig X agreed that Bavaria should keep the "old faith" while the church should be reformed.
Sold into private hands in 1872, the hill castle above the Isar keeps its tall square donjon, curtain walls and red-tiled residential wings, and today houses the Museum Grünwald.
