Acropolis of Athens
The Acropolis of Athens is an ancient fortified rocky outcrop above Athens that contains several major Classical Greek buildings, the most famous being the Parthenon. The surviving monuments on the flat-topped plateau include the Propylaea gateway, the Parthenon, the Erechtheion with its Caryatid porch, and the small Temple of Athena Nike.

A flattish-topped limestone outcrop rising about 150 m above the city, crowned by white-golden Pentelic marble temples: the Parthenon’s Doric colonnade and pediments dominate the summit, the Propylaea forms the monumental western gateway, the Erechtheion sits on an uneven terrace with its distinctive Porch of the Caryatids, and the small tetrastyle Ionic Temple of Athena Nike stands near the edge. Cyclopean retaining walls enclose the plateau and the rock slopes down to olive groves and the city.
