Theatre of Dionysus

The Theatre of Dionysus is an ancient Greek theatre built into the south slope of the Acropolis in Athens, part of the sanctuary of Dionysus. It served as the main venue for dramatic festivals (City Dionysia) and was enlarged into a large stone auditorium in the fourth century BC under Lycurgus.

What Theatre of Dionysus looked like in its prime.

Set into the Acropolis' south slope, the theatre is a large semicircular stone auditorium with many concentric tiers of seats rising from a circular orchestra. The front rows contain carved Pentelic stone thrones; the seating is divided by narrow radial stairways into wedge-shaped sectors. A broad stage building (skene) runs behind the orchestra with projecting rectangular paraskenia at its ends, and the rock and walkways of the Acropolis rise immediately behind the stage.
