Largo di Torre Argentina

Largo di Torre Argentina is an open urban square in Rome containing the excavated remains of four Roman Republican temples and part of the Theatre of Pompey. The sacred cluster fronts onto a paved street and sat within the dense public complex of the Campus Martius. The site preserves podiums, columnar temples (including a circular tholos), and the stage/curia complex of Pompey's theatre.

What Largo di Torre Argentina looked like in its prime.

In its prime the site is a compact sacred quarter of white marble and travertine podiums, brick-faced concrete walls and red terracotta roof tiles. Four temple buildings rise on high stepped podia—one a round tholos with fluted columns—fronting a broad basalt-paved street and colonnaded porticos. The theatre’s curved stone cavea and tall scaenae (stage wall) enclose part of the space. Painted stucco and polychrome terracotta antefixes ornament cornices; marble statues stand within temple cellae.
