Torre dei Conti

The Torre dei Conti is a medieval fortified tower in Rome, built as a fortified residence for the Conti family and sited beside the Imperial Fora near the Forum of Nerva. Originally much taller and clad in travertine taken from nearby imperial monuments, it has been repaired and reused many times and stands today as a truncated brick tower. It occupies the footprint of an exedra of the ancient portico on which it was raised.

As it stood in 1238

The shape it held in its prime.

A tall, blocky medieval tower of warm brown brick once completely clad in pale travertine, now showing exposed masonry where facing was removed; vertical, nearly windowless walls are punctured by small square apertures and rise from a base built over an ancient curved exedra. The roofline is a fortified parapet, the massive form sits isolated against the sky and the tower occupies a tight urban corner beside later residential buildings.
