The Cathedral of Saint Mary Major (Sé de Lisboa) is Lisbon's medieval Roman Catholic cathedral, begun in 1147 and repeatedly altered thereafter. The building combines a fortress-like Romanesque west façade with twin towers, a barrel-vaulted nave with triforium, a Gothic ambulatory with radiating chapels and an attached cloister. It is the seat of the Patriarchate of Lisbon and has been classified as a National Monument.

A heavy, fortress-like west façade of pale, weathered limestone blocks with two square crenellated towers flanking a deep arched central portal; a large circular rose window sits above the portal within a recessed arch. The towers show high bell-arched openings with visible bells and one tower bears a round clock face. The masonry ranges from smooth ashlar to repaired blocks; the portal is sheltered by a low narthex and broad worn steps descend to the street.
