Two tall, close-set rectangular stone tower remnants rise from a wooded, sloping bank; the masonry is grey-brown rubble with narrow vertical window slits and a taller chimney-like projection on one tower. The tops are broken but would once have formed a continuous roofline and connecting curtain wall; one tower face is heavily covered in climbing vegetation today. Trees and undergrowth crowd the base and exposed roots and fallen trunks litter the foreground.

The story of Finavon Castle.
The Finavon estate was the property of the Lindsay Earls of Crawford from 1375, and they built the original castle on the site. David Lindsay, 10th Earl of Crawford, married Margaret, daughter of Cardinal David Beaton, at Finavon in 1546, and Burke recorded the family's life there as one of "martial exercise, the chase, and the baronial banquet".
Extravagance eventually ruined the Crawford fortunes, and in 1625 the barony of Finavon was disposed of by forced sale to Alexander Lindsay, 2nd Lord Spynie. It later passed through the Carnegie family, the Gordon Earls of Aboyne and the Gardynes.
The tower visible today, dating from about 1600, was an L-plan tower house of five storeys with a garret and courtyard — excavation has shown it was an adjunct built onto the north-east corner of a much older and more extensive medieval structure. Nearby stands Finavon Doocot, Scotland's largest dovecote with 2,400 nesting boxes, believed built for the Earl of Crawford in the 16th century.
