The building centres on a medieval three-storey tower house that was extended and remodelled over centuries, notably in the late 18th century and again in the 1860s and early 20th century; it is a Category A listed building.

Compact, pinkish-red sandstone castle set above a wooded slope and lawns by the River Ayr, with a clear older three-storey medieval tower at the south-west corner joined to larger 18th- and 19th-century wings. The roofline mixes steep slate roofs and many tall chimneys, with castellated parapets on extended wings and regular sash windows in later ranges; the main entrance added in 1908 sits on a polite, symmetrical façade. At prime the masonry is complete and the grounds laid out.

Sorn Castle stands by the River Ayr just outside the village of Sorn in East Ayrshire. At its core is a medieval three-storey tower house, extended over the centuries, notably in the late 18th century, and remodelled in the Scots Baronial style by David Bryce in the 1860s for the Somervell family, then its owners. It is protected as a category A listed building.
In September 1598 the wedding of Ludovic Stewart, 2nd Duke of Lennox, and Jean Campbell, a great-granddaughter of James IV of Scotland, was celebrated at Sorn with a banquet attended by James VI, who stayed two nights. The castle was sold on in 1908 and remodelled again in the early 20th century; its notable residents have included James Somervell and James Gordon McIntyre, Lord Sorn.
