Academy of Fine Arts Vienna

The Academy of Fine Arts Vienna is a public art school in Vienna, founded in 1688 and housed in a purpose-built Ringstraße building designed by Theophil Hansen and inaugurated in 1877. The 19th-century building contains teaching studios, exhibition and collection spaces including a large library and the Kupferstichkabinett (etching cabinet). It remains an active institution for art education and research.

The façade is a three-storey, richly modelled stone front on the Ringstraße with rusticated ground floor, a white six-columned Ionic portico reached by a broad stone staircase, two bronze statues flanking the steps, and a continuous row of arched windows above set in deep niches containing life-size stone figures. Terracotta-coloured pilasters and sculptural ornament surround the windows; a heavy cornice and balustrade run beneath the flat roof; mature plane trees frame the square.
