Albertina

The Albertina is a museum housed in the Palais Erzherzog Albrecht on the Augustinian Bastion in Vienna’s Innere Stadt. It contains one of the world’s great graphic collections alongside major holdings of Impressionist and modern art and public exhibition halls. The historic palace was restored and expanded with a modern entrance canopy and infrastructure in the 2000s to form the museum complex visitors see today.

A long, three-storey pale-stucco Habsburg palace façade atop a stone bastion with a carved balustrade and arched street-level portals. A sharp, aluminum-clad triangular canopy (Hollein’s Soravia Wing) projects over the bastion entrance; beneath it are recessed arched doorways and escalators. The terrace above the bastion is punctuated by a bronze equestrian statue, wide stone double staircases lead to the palace level, and a line of street cafés and umbrellas runs along the carriageway.
