Hammersmith Apollo

The Hammersmith Apollo is an Art Deco live‑entertainment theatre in Hammersmith, London, opened in 1932 as the Gaumont Palace cinema. The Grade II*‑listed building is known for its broad curved stone-and-brick façade and a large auditorium that has hosted films, concerts and variety shows since its opening.

A broad, curved central façade of pale stone topped by a high red‑brown brick drum; the central bay is pierced by a regular rhythm of tall, fluted vertical pilasters/windows set into a smooth white stone wall. The brick upper block sweeps in a low curve above a black enamel marquee that runs the full front, with large vertical poster cases on the flanking brick volumes. Scale is civic — a deep recessed entrance under the long marquee giving onto multiple doorway bays to the auditorium.
