Kremlin

The Moscow Kremlin is a fortified complex in the historic centre of Moscow that encloses palaces, cathedrals, the Kremlin Wall and towers, and administrative buildings. It overlooks the Moskva River, Red Square and Alexander Garden and has served as the residence and seat of government for Russia's rulers. The complex contains the Grand Kremlin Palace, several cathedrals clustered on Cathedral Square, the Ivan the Great Bell Tower and the Kremlin Armoury.

The shape it held in its prime.

A long, crenellated red-brick wall punctuated by square and conical towers with green, tiled spires and red stars; behind it a strip of mature trees and broad cobbled courtyards. Low yellow-and-white palace façades capped by green metal roofs sit beside a cluster of white stone cathedrals topped with gilded onion domes and crosses. A tall white bell tower with a gilded dome rises above the cluster. The complex borders a wide river embankment and an approach bridge.
