Spasskaya Tower

The Spasskaya Tower is the principal gate tower on the eastern wall of the Moscow Kremlin, facing Red Square. Built of heavy red brick with white-stone decorative courses, it carries large four-faced clock dials, an open arched belfry and a tall tiled octagonal spire crowned by a five-pointed ruby-red star. The gate provides a vaulted passage through the Kremlin wall and contains galleries, staircases and the clock mechanism high in the tower.

What Spasskaya Tower looked like in its prime.

A tall red‑brick tower rising from the Kremlin wall: a rectangular lower block pierced by a large arched gate, white‑stone cornices and Gothic white limestone ornament around the upper tiers. Each side of the upper tower bears a large black clock face with gilded Roman numerals and hands. Above an open arched belfry sits an octagonal green‑glazed tiled spire culminating in a illuminated ruby‑red five‑pointed star. Crenellated brick walls and bastions flank the base; the masonry and white dressings are well maintained.
