Red Square

Red Square is Moscow's principal historic public square, a long rectangular cobbled plaza lying along the eastern wall of the Kremlin. It is framed by major buildings including Saint Basil's Cathedral, the State Historical Museum and the GUM trading rows, and contains urban fixtures such as Lobnoye Mesto and the Monument to Minin and Pozharsky.

What Red Square looked like in its prime.

A broad rectangular plaza paved in dark gabbro-diabase cobbles, about three hundred metres long, bordered on the west by the high red-brick crenellated Kremlin wall with green-tented tower roofs and a clock tower, and on the east by a continuous arcade of pale stone trading rows capped by a long glass-and-iron roof. At the southern end, a compact cluster of polychrome onion domes rises from a low stone base; a bronze equestrian monument and a low white stone proclamation platform sit near the plaza centre.
