Armathwaite Castle was built in the 15th century by the Skelton family on a strong point along the west bank of the River Eden in Cumbria, to defend against Scottish raiders. The Skeltons were a family of standing, representing the county and the city of Carlisle in parliament, and they resided at the castle until 1712, when Richard Skelton sold it to William Sanderson.
The castle passed to the Milbournes, and in 1846 to William Lowther, 2nd Earl of Lonsdale. The original four-storey pele tower was converted into a mansion with a classical face in the early 19th century, and the Grade II* listed building remains privately owned today.
