Long, rectangular ashlar stone mansion-castle with an even, crenellated roofline and multiple square, battlemented towers at the corners and along the façade. The facade is three to four storeys with regularly spaced rectangular windows, tall chimneys rising above the battlements, and a continuous parapet. It stands low on gently rolling parkland with open lawns and scattered mature trees behind and to the sides; masonry is pale grey and intact at its prime.

In the Civil War it was held by the Royalist Sir William Darcy, who compounded for the return of his confiscated estate; his descendant Henry Darcy sold it to William Cuthbert in 1743, and it shortly afterwards passed to the Hopper family.

A fire in 1796 destroyed most of the castle's interior, and the building was substantially rebuilt and refitted in the early 19th century behind its crenellated medieval exterior. Members of the Chaytor family lived at Witton until the mid-20th century; the Grade II* listed castle is now the centrepiece of a holiday and caravan country park.
