Blarney Castle

Blarney Castle is a medieval stone keep and surrounding fortified demesne near the town of Blarney in County Cork, Ireland. The existing rectangular tower keep dates from the rebuilding of 1446 and is set on rocky ground above lawns and a small stream, with extensive gardens and a later mansion (Blarney House) on the estate.

The shape it held in its prime.

A massive square-plan stone keep with a crenellated parapet and visible machicolations sits on exposed rock above terraced lawns and a narrow stream. A cylindrical stair-turret with arched openings projects from one face of the keep; low curtain walls and a ruined round tower stand on the lower slopes. The masonry is grey limestone; narrow vertical slit windows punctuate the tall walls. Paths, stepped terraces and mature trees surround the fortified core.
