Its story
The story of Inverlochy Castle Hotel.
Inverlochy Castle Hotel is not a medieval fortress but a Victorian baronial mansion near Fort William, named after the 13th-century Inverlochy Castle about two miles away. It was built in 1863 by William Scarlett, 3rd Baron Abinger, soon after he succeeded his father in the barony. Queen Victoria spent a week here during an 1873 visit to Balmoral, remarking "I never saw a lovelier or more romantic spot".
The house and estate were sold in 1944 to Joseph Hobbs, a Canadian entrepreneur who owned the nearby Ben Nevis distillery. On inheriting the estate, Hobbs' son converted the house into a hotel, which welcomed its first guests in 1969, and in 2001 Travel + Leisure magazine voted it the number 17 best hotel in Europe.
