Mingary Castle
Mingary Castle is a medieval fortress on a rocky promontory overlooking the Sound of Mull on the Ardnamurchan peninsula of western Scotland. The roughly hexagonal stone castle has thick curtain walls, a multi-storey residential range on the landward side, and a small inner courtyard. Its remains are protected as a category A listed building and it has undergone recent stabilization and partial restoration work.

Perched on a rocky coastal ridge above clear sea, Mingary is a roughly hexagonal stone castle with very thick curtain walls (notably thicker on the seaward side). The sea-facing wall follows the rock edge; the landward side contains a surviving multi-storey rectangular residential range with regular rectangular window openings. The central area is an open courtyard bounded by the curtain wall and the residential block; masonry is rough local stone, weathered and partially collapsed at the tops.

Mingary Castle stands on a ridge of rock above the sea a mile southeast of Kilchoan, commanding the entrance to the Sound of Mull — a strategically important site for communication with the overseas territories. The castle is roughly hexagonal, its walls nine feet thick, and thicker still on the seaward side.
King James IV used Mingary as a stronghold for fighting off Clan Donald in the late 15th century, and in March 1499, after capturing John of Islay, Lord of the Isles, he gave John MacIain the lands of Ardnamurchan and 'Castle Mengarie'. Clan MacDonald of Lochalsh besieged the castle in 1515, and again two years later, when they finally took it.
Later occupants included Clan Campbell and the Earls of Argyll, in 1612, and in 1644 Alasdair mac Colla took the castle from its Covenanter garrison. The remains are protected as a category A listed building and have undergone recent stabilisation and partial restoration.
