A compact four-storey rectangular tower house set on a rocky knoll, roughly 30 by 40 feet with walls up to 10 feet thick. The lowest ~10 feet of walling are rubble masonry; the upper masonry consists of well-cut ashlar blocks, and traces of corbelling remain at the upper corners. The arched main entrance is on the first storey, originally reached by a ladder. Interiors include a vaulted basement and a vaulted first-floor hall; a barmkin and a causewayed approach occupy the slope to the southeast.

Mearns Castle was built by Herbert, Lord Maxwell, under a royal warrant issued in 1449, on a rocky knoll at Newton Mearns, south of Glasgow. The four-storey rectangular tower measured 30 by 40 feet with walls ten feet thick, its lower courses of rubble masonry and its upper walls of well-cut ashlar, a sign the tower probably rose on the foundations of an earlier building.

The Maxwells kept the castle until James VI required the fifth Lord to deliver it up to the crown. It was then sold to Sir George Maxwell of Nether Mearns in the mid-17th century, and later passed to the Shaw-Stewart family. The arched main entrance on the first storey, once reached by ladder, is now walled up.

Inside, a vaulted basement sits below a vaulted first-floor hall with stone window seats, which once had a minstrels' gallery; only faint traces remain of the barmkin that followed the edge of the knoll. Restored in the 20th century, the Category A listed tower now forms part of the Maxwell Mearns Castle Church.
