The history of Clan Cameron

The Camerons of Lochiel are one of the great clans of the western Highlands, their lands clustered around Loch Eil and Loch Arkaig. Their fighting reputation was such that they were known simply as 'fiercer than fierceness itself'.

Donald Cameron, 'the Gentle Lochiel' (c.1700–1748), is the clan's most celebrated chief. Reluctant to join the 1745 Rising, knowing the cost, he ultimately raised the clan for Bonnie Prince Charlie. His decision is often credited with setting the rising in motion.

Lochiel was wounded at Culloden, fled to France, and died in exile. The Cameron Highlanders, raised in 1793, carried the clan's military tradition into the modern era.
