What Cathedral of St. Michael and St. Gudula looked like in its prime.

A wide, pale Gobertange-stone west façade dominated by two tall buttressed towers and a large ogival multi-light window above three pointed portals; vertical buttresses, rows of lancet windows, pinnacles and gargoyles define the upper stages. A broad, symmetrical stone staircase leads up from a rectangular forecourt. Inside, a long nave with four-part vaults, cylindrical columns with cabbage-leaf capitals, side aisles and high clerestory windows opens toward a three-bay Gothic choir and five-sided apse.
