Grand-Place

Grote Markt

The Grand-Place (Grote Markt) is the central paved square of Brussels, surrounded by the city Town Hall, the King's House (Maison du Roi / Broodhuis) and a ring of ornate guildhalls. The ensemble presents a compact rectangular plaza edged by multi-storey, richly decorated façades and arcaded ground floors and remains the city's principal ceremonial and market square.

What Grand-Place looked like in its prime.

A rectangular cobbled plaza (about 68 × 110 m) entirely paved and edged by continuous three- and four‑storey stone façades. The south side is dominated by the Town Hall with a 96 m Brabantine Gothic tower rising to an openwork octagonal spire topped by a gilt Saint Michael. Opposite stands the neo‑Gothic King's House with galleries and a central tower. Guildhalls show densely sculpted stonework, pilasters, balustrades, tall arched windows, steep dark slate roofs with rows of dormers, and gilded decorative statuary and cartouches.
