Old Town Square

Staroměstské náměstí

Old Town Square is the historic central square of Prague's Old Town, edged by medieval, Renaissance and Baroque houses and dominated by the Gothic Church of Our Lady before Týn and the Old Town Hall with its astronomical clock (Orloj). The square's open cobbled plaza contains the Jan Hus Memorial, memorial crosses in the pavement and space for markets and public gatherings.

As it stood in 1915

What Old Town Square looked like in its prime.

A broad cobbled plaza of roughly 9,000 m² punctuated by a central bronze Jan Hus statue on a low stone plinth and circular flowerbed; surrounded by tightly packed multi-storey façades in pale plaster, painted stucco and carved stone, all topped with red clay tile roofs. On the southwest edge a tall Gothic stone tower with the Orloj on its façade; opposite, the twin dark pinnacles of the Týn Church rise to about 80 m. Arcaded ground floors, tram-free pedestrian paving and scattered market stalls complete the scene.
