Winchester Cathedral

Winchester Cathedral is the cathedral church of Winchester, England, and the seat of the Bishop of Winchester. The present building was constructed between 1079 and 1532 and combines Norman fabric with extensive Perpendicular Gothic remodelling, forming a very long and wide medieval cathedral noted for its nave, crossing tower, retroquire and large west window.

The shape it held in its prime.

Extremely long, wide ashlar-stone nave in Perpendicular Gothic, with repeated pointed-arch bays, tall clerestory windows and strong vertical buttresses; a square Norman crossing tower rises near the midline; a grand Perpendicular west front with a very large traceried window and flanking pinnacles terminates the axis. Roofs are leaded or slate, the masonry a warm beige with weathering; the cathedral sits behind a short iron railing with a grass forecourt and paved approach.
