As it stood in 2004

What Scottish Parliament Building looked like in its prime.

A compact campus of interlocking low buildings in pale cast concrete, red-brown timber cladding and curtain glazing, capped by irregular pale metal roofs shaped like upturned boats and leaf forms. Turf-covered concrete "branches" slope away from the buildings into planted wildflower lawns. A paved forecourt with shallow geometric water basins, flagpoles and timber-latticed canopy fronts the main public entrance. Windows are varied in scale and shape; materials include oak and sycamore joinery and local stone floors.
