Plaza de España

The Plaza de España is a large semicircular monumental square in María Luisa Park, Seville, designed by Aníbal González and completed for the 1929 Ibero-American Exposition. The complex comprises a long red-brick colonnaded building with two end towers, a curved canal crossed by four bridges, a central fountain, and 48 tiled provincial alcoves. Today the buildings house museums and government offices and the plaza is a restored public space.

What Plaza de España looked like in its prime.

A vast semicircular sweep of warm red brick and glazed ceramic, the complex presents a long two-storey arcade of round arches and paired columns, punctuated by a taller central pavilion and two towered terminations. A shallow elliptical canal hugs the plaza, crossed by low tiled bridges; a large circular fountain marks the paved plaza. Colourful azulejo bench-alcoves line the inner wall beneath covered galleries with geometric neo‑Mudéjar wooden artesonados; ceramic balustrades and lampposts edge the water.
