Sagrada Família

Templo Expiatorio de la Sagrada Familia

The Basílica i Temple Expiatori de la Sagrada Família is a large Roman Catholic church in Barcelona designed by Antoni Gaudí and built from 1882 onward. Characterised by multiple tapering spires and three highly distinct façades (Nativity, Passion and the planned Glory), it combines Gothic and Catalan Modernist forms and remains a major place of worship and tourism.

What Sagrada Família looked like in its prime.

A monumental, sand- to ochre-coloured stone complex rising as a clustered forest of tapering, conical spires capped with mosaic pinnacles and a giant cross on the central tower. Three distinct façades carve the exterior: the highly ornate, nature-filled Nativity façade; the angular, rib-like Passion façade; and the broad Glory entrance. Tall, tree-like stone columns and ribbed vaulting define the interior; stained-glass fills slender window openings, and the church sits within the Eixample grid framed by small plazas and trees.
